Job Description

WorldFish is leading Fish for Livelihood project (F4L) Activity funded by USAID, a project which aims to provides a means of ensuring the improved availability of diverse, safe, affordable nutrient-rich foods, especially for women and young children from poor and vulnerable households. This will be achieved by ensuring that poor households have an increased ability to purchase accessible nutritious foods due to improved incomes from entrepreneurial activities including improved small-scale aquaculture in the intervention areas and the strengthening of aquaculture market systems with particular attention to expanding opportunities for women and youth. In addition, behavioural change work will prioritize nutritious-conscious household decisions by means of both home production and local markets. Specifically, it is expected that the adoption of fish culture technologies would contribute to improved food and nutrition security for poor households in several ways;

  1. Generating income from fish culture which would be used to purchase nutritious food,
  2. Creating alternative employment generating activities and increasing labour productivity, and
  3. Increasing available food supply and fish consumption.

The geographical areas to be covered include Kachin, Mandalay, Magway, Northern Shan and Sagaing Regions/States.

The project has three main outputs:

  1. Small-scale aquaculture production increased through strategic activities including improved land and water use, increased access to high quality inputs (feed, seed and equipment), capacity development and research into production, and access to credit.
  2. Market-based system approaches (MSA) further developed and utilized to increase access to food safe fish and fish products by poor people. Capacity building will ensure that market systems function more effectively, sustainably and to the benefit of the poor.
  3. Enhanced nutrition and WASH practices delivered via social behaviour change communication (SBCC). Capacities developed into the production, processing and consumption of food safe aquaculture and other fish-based products.

The consultant shall undertake but not be limited to the following activities as the scope of consultancy:

  • The consultant shall act as the research assistant to assist research team in the implementation of the key research program of F4L Activity.
  • Review the existing research agenda and needs of as stated above through consultation with project team.
  • Preparation of a comprehensive research plan giving emphasis on overall goal of the project and FISH CRP.
  • Review available data collection tools and database, and convert those into software/s for analysis.
  • Drafting outlines on reports and journal articles in consultation with the research team.
  • Analysis data and information and draft articles.

Scope of Work

This scope of work defines the key parameters, responsibilities and deliverables expected for the assignment, which is to support aquaculture and associated market research data collection, analysis and development of reports, and PowerPoint presentation for the Fish for Livelihoods Activity. The consultant would be involved in the team and support in carrying out some of the field studies on small-scale aquaculture and fisheries, drafting reports/papers and publish in international journals. The consultant will be responsible for the following deliverables:

Key Deliverables

  • Update databases with the data and information (eg. technologies, access to inputs, gender role, adoption factors, credit functions, nutrition) collected from field on aquaculture and fisheries
  • Analyze and draft articles on aquaculture technologies and fish feed using data collected on aquaculture and fisheries value chains

Requirements

Skills and Qualifications

  • Experiences on field data collection, analysis, writing and publishing papers/articles in agriculture/aquaculture research and extension projects
  • Ability to edit documents and reports
  • Master level qualification or related discipline; PhD is preferable
  • A minimum of 3 years of working experience preferably in related field or International NGO/company
  • Excellent computer skills in SPSS, and Excel
